Ode to MN 1711

We are food obsessed. You might say that we are in the age of designer food. Ask your mother how many apple or lettuce choices could be found in the local supermarket when she was a girl. Now ask you grandmother. You might be in for a shock. What does that have to do with MN 1711?

“Designated in 1974 as the MN 1711, and released in 1991, the Honeycrisp, once slated to be discarded, has rapidly become a prized commercial commodity, as its sweetness, firmness, and tartness make it an ideal apple for eating raw.”

That’s right, folks I am talking about an apple cultivar, the Jimmy Choo of apples if you will, developed at the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station’s Horticultural Research Center at the University of Minnesota. They love the Honeycrisp so much in Minnesota that it is now the state fruit. I love it too, but sadly the season is over. No Granny Smith, no Pink Lady or even Gala will do. We will miss you.
